Role of "The Mind" in healing chronic back pain:

Over the years, I have seen so many women go through invasive surgeries, take painful shots and pop harmful pills, only to find momentary relief from their chronic low back pain!

With the new advances in modern medicine, we have hundreds of treatment options, holistic therapies, and leading edge medications, all promising to give the relief we are seeking.

They why are more and more women suffering from that nagging low back pain that won't go away? What is missing in the modern medicine?

For answers, we need to take look at texts on yoga that are hundreds of years old!

Today, we understand Yoga mainly as a form of workout or physical practice. But it was developed as a system of personal growth.

The original and authentic definition of yoga states that "Yoga is silencing the mind!" When our mind is still, we experience the state of yoga that is the real connection with our true self! Our true self or Inner Self is always loving, happy, calm and peaceful.

We seek happiness in the world outside. We spend thousands of dollars on moments of happiness. But Yoga tells us that the real happiness lies within. If we want to find true love, peace, and joy, then all we need to do is to connect with our inner self through yoga and meditation!

What does that mean? Don't we need to do all those yoga poses we spend hours perfecting?

Yes, we do. We do need to practice yoga postures to help us relieve muscle tension, restore movement and improve the flexibility of stiff joints. But we can't forget the link between the body and the mind!

As long as we experience mental and emotional stress, our bodies can not heal completely.

Mental and emotional stress, although not visible like physical injuries or disabilities, can have a devastating effect on your health and well being.

When we experience negative thoughts, mental stress or uncontrolled emotional outbursts, our body creates stress hormones which help us cope with the stressful situation.

But when we are chronically stressed, these stress hormones can wreak havoc in our bodies, preventing it from healing!

These days almost everyone seems to be stressed around us! Meeting the work deadlines, facing challenges while parenting our kids, keeping everyone in our lives happy and satisfied, takes a toll on our minds and bodies.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

When we attain emotional balance, and mental stability through the practice of yoga and meditation, our bodies begin to heal at a deeper level.

Silencing the mind induces a relaxation response in the body. When our bodies are fully relaxed, the repair process begins!

To accomplish complete healing at not only physical but also at the mental and emotional level, we have look beyond our bodies. Beyond our achy muscles and pinched nerves. Then we will find the missing link between the pain and authentic healing: Our minds!
